{lyrics & songs}: Sara Groves Tribute Countdown #10

#10.  "Like A Skin"

This song was, I admit, in the running with a few others ("Loving a Person", and "Just Showed Up For My Own Life").  However, this one won out because I have so often thought that I have moved on from things--I already struggled with this thing and I want to be done with it.  I want to shed it like old skin, never to get it back again.

This song has been most helpful in my struggle with body image.  I've never been the skinny girl and for years and years I felt this conflict with what I saw in the mirror and who I felt I was inside.  Recently, this battle has subsided, but other things are still struggles: kindness, gentleness, forgiveness, anger, peace.....just when I think I've got it, I have a moment or experience to remind me that I am not there yet.  That I'm not a butterfly looking back at my caterpillar self with these things, but still struggling inside the cocoon.

The butterfly can just look back
Flap those wings and say Oh, yeah
I never have to be a worm again

The snake gets tired of being him
He wriggles from that itchy skin
Leaves it lying where he’s been and moves on

I’ve been longing for something tangible
Some kind of proof that there’s been change in me

Feels like I have been waking up
Only to fight with the same old stuff
Change is slow and it fills me with such doubt
Come on New Man where have you been
Help me wriggle from this Self I’m in
And leave it like a skin upon the ground
