{lyrics & songs}: Sara Groves Tribute Countdown #4

4. "Generations"

The album "Conversations," was the album that made me a fan.  I was in High School and a friend loved it and told me I would too.  It was right around the time that my grandpa was ill and my mom was making the flight to say good-bye.  I threw this CD in her suitcase last minute and said, "make sure you listen to 'Generations' and 'What Do I Know?'"  A line from "What Do I Know?" was on my grandpa's funeral card.

When an artist's lyrics make it to an immediate relatives' funeral card, you feel a special connection.  I was able to show Sara that card when she was on tour in Wisconsin and she was touched that a stranger found comfort in her music at a difficult time.

Anyway, this song was written before Sara had any children.  Most of my friends have told me in the past month that they are expecting, so the next generation is very real to me.  I love this song because it reminds me that my choices don't just affect myself or even those living immediately with me.  Future generations probably won't know my name, but they can still bear the fruit of my choices.

Today, I have a choice:
Deuteronomy 30:19-21a
"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.  For the Lord is your life."

I keep finding cheesy videos--the tragedy of loving a non-popular artist

I can taste the fruit of Eve. I'm aware of sickness death and disease. The results of her choices were vast. Eve was the first but she wasn't the last. If I were honest with myself, had I been standing at that tree, my mouth and my hands would be covered with fruit. Things I shouldn't know and things I shouldn't see. . Chorus: Remind me of this with every decision. Generations will reap what I sow. I can pass on a curse or a blessing to those I will never know. . She taught us to fear the serpent. I'm learning to fear myself and all of the things I am capable of in my search for acceptance, wisdom and wealth. To say the devil made me do it is a cop-out and a lie. The devil can't make me do anything when I'm calling on Jesus Christ. . Chorus . To my great-great-great-granddaughter, live in peace. To my great-great-great-grandson, live in peace. To my great-great-great granddaughter, live in peace. To my great-great-great-grandson, live in peace, live in peace. . Chorus . Eve was the first but she wasn't the last.
