{lyrics} mumford & sons

It's no secret that I love music.  I mean, most people love music, so I'm not saying I'm unique, but I love hearing new songs, old songs, new artists, old artists, music videos and interpretive dance.  I would rather go to a concert than a sporting event--always.  I can usually remember what songs are playing in the background when I'm at a restaurant or store and at times am unable to hold a conversation when I'm focused on the "background noise".

Anyway, I'm a weird music lover because I can rarely remember names of songs or bands and often mess up lyrics.  Oh well.  Keeps me humble.

Part of why I try hard to be in tune with the music of all sorts is because I believe it often says more about our culture than any politician or news story.  Musicians are our modern day poets and what shapes our subconscious will eventually shape our ideas.

A few years ago while vacationing on the Oregon coast a friend introduced me to Mumford and Sons.  I didn't love them immediately but since they have warmed their way into my heart and I am very much looking forward to seeing them live.  Their lyrics ask honest questions and their harmonies send shivers down my spine.  It gives me hope to think that their honesty about life and God and love will become the new popular.

"Awake My Soul"
In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die
And where you invest your love, you invest your life
In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die
And where you invest your love, you invest your life

Awake my soul
Awake my soul
Awake my soul
For you were made to meet your maker

"Hold on to What You Believe"
I ran away
I could not take the burden of both me and you
It was too fast
Casting love on me as if it were a spell I could not break
When it was a promise I could not make

But what if I was wrong?

But hold on to what you believe in the light
When the darkness has robbed you of all your sight

"Sigh No More"
Love; it will not betray you
Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free
Be more like the man you were made to be

There is a design, an alignment to cry
Of my heart to see,
The beauty of love as it was made to be

  1. This is lovely, JoAnn. I love that you love music and I love that you sometimes forget the words to songs like I do. :) I have listened to Mumford and Sons a few times, but now I will have to listen to them more closely for their poetry and harmonies. Thanks for the recommendation, friend. Miss you!
